Welcome to our April newsletter and after we have all consumed far too much chocolate 🍫, it is time to have a look at what has been going on here in Tenerife — what’s new to the market, who is buying, and for what purpose. 🚀 NASA & TENERIFE
The Canary Islands — and more significantly Tenerife — have played a pivotal role in space travel and atmospheric studies, including support for some of the well‑known APOLLO missions and the most recent ARTEMIS mission.
Essentially, the roles of guarding the galaxies are a joint operation between Tenerife and Gran Canaria:
- Tenerife takes the role of the night watchman 🌌 via the high‑tech Teide Observatory (Izaña), keeping watch over satellites, space debris, and atmospheric conditions.
- Gran Canaria’s Maspalomas station provides the “boots on the ground” telemetry, space‑probing, communication hub 📡.
Some of the biggest space missions of the modern era have tapped into Tenerife and Gran Canaria for support, and the world‑class scientific facilities perched on top of Teide are regularly used by NASA and other space‑exploring agencies.
- Izaña — silent, vigilant, always looking upward 🔭
- Maspalomas — where signals hit Earth, get decoded, and get sent onward to mission control 🛰️
Whilst our beautiful island is not a launch site, it is a critical support node in NASA’s global infrastructure.

🐋 MARINE MADNESS IN TENERIFE
Tenerife has had a remarkable week of marine activity — the kind of sightings that get biologists buzzing and even leave our local fishermen a little starstruck 🎣✨.
Multiple Orcas were spotted off the south coast near Costa Adeje. Normally it’s our resident Pilot Whales and dancing Dolphins 🐬 that steal the show, but this uncommon appearance by the Wolves of the Sea proved unforgettable.
And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, up pops — quite literally — the deep‑sea anglerfish, also known as the very cuddly “black seadevil” 👹🐟. These extremely rare creatures normally live 2,000–6,500 ft down in total darkness, and the near‑8,000 ft underwater ravines between Tenerife and La Gomera are their playground.
Why the sudden guest appearances?
- El Niño 🌡️

- Upwelling changes
- Seismic or oceanographic disturbances 🌋
Local scientists remain cautious but agree there is nothing to be concerned about — nature simply acts in mysterious ways.
