Once you’ve settled into life in Tenerife, you may be able to take part in local democracy — but the rules differ depending on your nationality. Here’s what UK nationals, EU citizens, and long‑term residents need to know.
🇬🇧🇪🇺 Voting in Local Elections in Spain
If you have been legally resident in Spain for at least 3 years, you can vote — and stand as a candidate — in local municipal elections.
This applies to:
- UK nationals, under the UK–Spain bilateral voting agreement
- EU citizens, under EU freedom‑of‑movement rules
To vote in local elections, you must:
✔️ 1. Register on the municipal register (padrón municipal)
This confirms you live in the municipality.
✔️ 2. Formally declare your intention to vote
You must register on the local electoral roll (censo electoral).
✔️ 3. Reconfirm your registration before each election
The electoral authorities set a deadline before every election — you must reconfirm within that window.

❌ Elections You Cannot Vote In
Regardless of how long you’ve lived in Spain, you cannot vote in:
- Spanish general elections
- Spanish regional elections
- European Parliamentary elections (unless you are an EU citizen and choose to vote in Spain instead of your home country)
UK nationals cannot vote in EU elections anywhere, as the UK is no longer part of the EU.
🇬🇧 Voting in UK Elections While Living in Spain
If you’re a UK national living in Tenerife, you may still be able to vote in certain UK elections.
You can:
- Check your eligibility
- Register as an overseas voter
- Vote by post or proxy

🇪🇺 Voting Rights for EU Citizens Living in Tenerife
EU citizens living in Spain can:
✔️ Vote in Spanish local elections
After registering on the padrón and electoral roll.

EU citizens may choose to vote:
- In Spain, or
- In their home EU country
They must register their preference with the electoral authorities.
EU citizens cannot vote in Spanish national or regional elections.
